Elections

It has only been recently that ratepayers have elected their Mayor and
Deputy Mayor.

I would prefer a return to the old situation where they are elected by
the councillors.

Councillors know who is up to the job through the countless hours we
spend around a table debating every topic under the sun. We know who
is fit for the job through experience.

I encourage you to get informed before elections swing around again.
Find out who is doing what. Throw us out if you find we have achieved
very little. Get capable people elected and not just popular ones.

I would like to comment on your post.
You said "It has only been recently that rate payers have elected their Mayor and

and later
"Get capable people elected and not just popular ones."
Which begs the question: If councillors are elected by the popular vote, then how good will these popular councillors' choice of executives be?
German Nazi party was a capable elected government therefore they were better suited to choose the Reich Chancellor by your reasoning?
I am somewhat more comfortable with a system that errs on the side of diversity so as to avoid a too cosy situation where an institution becomes impervious to outside influences.i.e. the wish of the electorate who foot the bills.
Sometimes the least qualified people can rise to the occasion.
